Take us out to the ball game

The kids and I went for a rain walk after dinner tonight (although it stopped raining when we got out there), and we stopped to watch a bit of a little league game. L&L were full of questions, Lily's first one was "Mommy, is the man in blue (behind the plate) the coach or the hump?" Then I was answering what the bases are and why one of the players got walked, and what a strike is and a foul ball. I had a great time! :)

The other Lukasz

Lukasz just showed up at my side wearing some funny dress-up glasses. I gasped and said, "who are you?!" He replied, "Foogy Ga Bobby".

It was the bees!

After Lukasz's bath last night, as I was cleaning out his ears, he suddenly exclaimed, "They put honey in my ears!"

"Who did?" I asked.

"The bees!"

Interesting side note - honey and earwax are the same word in Polish.

Lukasz's singing debut! and some Lilyisms

So there's your daily dose of cute.

And now for some Lilyisms.

Singing, "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree, how deadly are your branches..."

And while telling a very elaborate, multi-character story in the bathtub, and this story centered around which character said, "Virus database has been updated." (It was the horse.)

Lukaszisms

His reason for not napping: "It's daytime!" Inarguable. Dammit.

After Tom lifts him up into the van, "Wow. You are big and strong and fat!"

Little cheeky monkey

Lily: Mommy?
Me: Yes? What's going on?
Lily: (said triumphantly) Nothing! I'm not crying. I'm not pushing. I'm not whining. I'm not yelling. I'm not bugging.

I guess "what's going on?" is my go-to phrase for when they are acting up.

Woochieisms

Lukasz is two and a half years old, and already I'm amazed at the words he knows and the way he uses them.

This morning he spilled a drop of his bottle on the bed and he said very clearly, "Oh oh, a little dot on the bed!" I wonder where he picked up the word dot. I think that's what amazes me so much. I can't remember specifically telling him a word, yet he uses it naturally.

I think I blogged a while ago that when Tom said to him one night, "Am I going to brush your teeth or what, Lukasz?" And Lukasz stopped running in circles for a moment, replied, "Um, what." And continued his running.

Well, a few nights ago I thought I'd try what I use on Lily when I need the kids to do something while giving them choice at the same time ("Do you want to wear this shirt or this shirt?" as a way of getting them dressed). It works for Lily, but Lukasz has already seen a way around this. I asked him, "Do you want Mommy to brush your teeth or Tatus to brush your teeth?" He looked at me, tilted his head onto my shoulder and said, "Um. Sleep now."

And then there's potty training, which he so far is not enjoying, other than the running around naked. When we are encouraging him to go on the potty, after he hasn't gone for a long time, he'll look down at himself and exclaim in dismay, "Not working!"

We've been in a little heat wave lately, so when we are home the kids just run around in their underwear, or less. Lukasz is very happy when he gets to wear "less". Being naked is cause for immediate celebration. He shouts "bee bum!" (his way of saying "naked bum!") and runs around as fast as he can, wanting us to chase his little bee bum. During the heat, he changed things up a bit and added a little wiggle-bum dance while holding a colander on his head and proclaiming he was a "mush-an!"

An answer for everything, guaranteed

And again it's after 9 p.m. and Lily and Lukasz are still up and running around. Lily's perfectly reasonable explanation for this persistent bedtime tardiness is: "But it's still DAYTIME!"

I used to think it was so great that it stayed light out till 9:30 in the summer... sigh.

So while we are trying to wrestle the kids into their pyjamas, Tom asks Lukasz, "Hey Lukasz, are we going to brush your teeth or what?"

Lukasz replied, "Um. What." and continued on his merry way.

Happy little piggys

So, the kids hate having their nails clipped. Fortunately, they love hearing songs and nursery rhymes, so whenever we clip their nails we recite "This little piggy", and we clip the nails of each piggy as we recite it. And to keep it interesting for them, we pause and get them to tell us what the third little piggy gets to eat.

Tom is in the bathroom right now with Lukasz and I clued in to what they were doing because every now and then, I hear Lukasz yell "PIZZA!!".

This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed home,
This little piggy had...
And this little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went wee, wee, wee all the way home.

Lily addition to the song is to offer the fourth little piggy some food, whatever the third piggy had. :)

Just part of the scenery

This evening as I was making dinner, I heard the familiar sounds of Lukasz experimentally tapping different pieces of furniture with a plastic tube (a piece of Mega Blocks). He came into the kitchen, tapping away, first on the oven door (the oven was not on), which caused him to pause because it makes a pretty great echoey banging sound, then he moved on to what was beside the stove. Me. Chopping carrots for dinner. He tap-tapped on my bum, but I guess he wasn't impressed because he moved on to the fridge without a word, then out of the kitchen.

Playing Cinderella

Lily is playing pretend this morning, and turning us all into characters from Cinderella. She is Cinderella of course, and Lukasz is the prince. And I, I am the pumpkin.

The lamb in the manger

Every year we set up a little manger that Babcia and Dziadek gave us. Lily was inspecting it yesterday after I set it up, and she noticed a sheep at the front of it. She asked me what it was, so I told her it was a sheep. Then she asked me what it's name was. I told her she could name it whatever she wanted. She then told me it was "lamb". I was impressed that she remembered the name for baby sheep!

She looked at the different animals and people for a while then impressed me even more by asking where Mary was. I showed her Mary, kneeling beside baby Jesus.

Then she said, "Yes, that's Mary. And that's her little lamb! Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb, Mary had a little lamb, it's fleece as white as snow..."

Getting what he wants, one way or the other

Tonight Lukasz is having a late dinner with Tatus. He's copying Tom and dipping his dinner in tzatziki. Tom is dipping chicken in the tzatziki, but Lukasz is dipping his zucchini in the tzatziki. I'm not eager to try that combination.

He lost a piece of zucchini in the tzatziki, so I fished it out for him with his spoon and offered it to him. He shook his head no so I left it on his plate. A few minutes later he wanted to use that spoon, picked it up, saw the tzatziki and zucchini stuck to it, tried to shake it off, and when that didn't work, he held the spoon out to Tom, and said, "EAT!".

Coffee it is.

This morning I was sure it was Saturday, because when I got up, Tom was still in bed. Turned out he'd overslept. Lily was up, which goes without saying because she IS our alarm clock. I made her bottle, she finished it, and Tom was still in bed. She went in to wake him and make him get up, then came out and told me this gem:

"Mommy, Tatus won't move. I think (pronounced sink) you need to make him something (pronounced somesing). Maybe some... coffee."

I stifled my laughter and obliged, and her Tatus roused himself from bed. Then I told him what she'd said, and we both chuckled, and she chimed in proudly, "I said that!"

Ah, kids. :)

Beauty treatment

Lily is pretending to make me gorgeous (doing my make up and hair). First, she gave me blue eyebrows, and now she's putting the finishing touches on a yellow jiggly-wig.

Now she's asking me if I want a red face and red ears... and she's calling me Grandma... Oh boy.

Tony nails

Lily and I were just tracing our hand prints and colouring on nail polish, and then I decided to turn mine upside-down and make it into an elephant. We drew grass for the elephant to walk on, gave the elephant spots on his back and flowers to eat, a little blue bird on his tail... and then Lily said, "This elephant needs somesing." I asked what it needs, and she repeated that "He needs somesing..." I waited... and she announced, "He needs tony nail polish!! Red tony nail polish!"

To hide in the cherry trees, I bet.

I drew some toe nails on each of the elephant's feet, and she got right to work giving him some bright red nail polish.

Oh how she makes me smile

Lily pointing out begonias and saying, "Look Mommy, there's a begon', and there's a begon' and there's a begon."

Lily singing London Bridges Falling down:
My old lady falling down, falling down, falling down
My old lady falling down, my fair lady
Take the key and lock her up, lock her up, lock her up
Take the key and lock her up, my fair lady

Lily, this morning

"It's on!"

I thought she was pointing to my computer.

"No, the outside is on! Now we don't have to sleep anymore!"

No no no no!

And for once it wasn't me saying it!

We were at the park this morning and Lukasz spied the perfect stick. And I mean perfect. The perfect swishy stick. He ran over to it, crouched, reached to pick it up... and as the word "No" formed on my mouth, leading to "No, Lukasz, we don't pick up sticks"... his hand that was reaching clenched except for his pointer finger, which he began shaking vigorously at the stick while yelling "No no no no!"

Atta boy!
